The landscape of utility communication networks is rapidly evolving as utilities respond to critical challenges. Utilities are working to improve service and sustainability – meeting higher customer expectations for faster service restoration after stronger, more frequent weather events, all while incorporating more renewable energy sources. In the Summer of 2019, Itron commissioned ZPryme to explore how the utility industry is deploying advanced communications networks to connect IIoT devices. At the core of distribution grid modernization is the need for layered communication networks, but how do utilities choose the right networks? These results show us that utilities are looking ahead to proactively prepare for the future needs – including connecting distribution automation, renewable energy, smart grid and smart city assets. In so doing, they move towards a more modular, resilient, reliable and flexible/dynamic grid harnessing a more diverse and distributed set of energy sources.
